Dr. B.M. Nene after achieving his highest qualification in medical available in this country and abroad in U.K. in 1971. In spite of very lucrative offers of jobs in America and U.K. he decided to come back and settle in his native town Barshi.

He was treating Mrs. Sarvamangalabai Uttareshwar Kathale as his patient and Mr. Uttareshwar Kathale saw how dedicatedly Dr. B.M. Nene was treating patients and decided to donate land to him, In August 1980 he donated land of 7.5 acres with charitable trust name Sau. S. U. Kathale Charitable Trust.

On this land with minimal facilities available at that time, Dr. B.M. Nene and his team decided to arrange a camp with Tata Hospital Team(TMH) and Dr. Prafull Desai (Director TMH) and his team of doctors including Dr. Ashok Mehta, Dr. Fakih, Dr. Anita Borjes and Dr. Din Shah at Jawahar Hospital Barshi and more than 1000 people were screened under this programme, During the programme Dr. Praful Desai declared entire Tata Hospital team will stand behind starting comprehensive hospital at Barshi.

It was suggestion from Dr. Desai that cancer society should be registered under societies act 1860, and he further suggested two words should be necessary one is Rural and another is Research.

Dr. Nene and his team has decided to registered a society in the name of Ashwini which is God of Doctors and hence on May 2nd 1981 Ashwini Rural Cancer Research & Relief Society was registered.

On 3rd May 1982 Actress Nargis Dutt died of cancer and Mr. Gulshan Rai A renowned producer and distributor of movies prompted Mr. Madan Chauhan, Dr. Nene and Mr. Dilip Sopal and team to meet Mr. Sunil Dutt  and he immediately confirmed help to team and arranged a charity show on 11th April 1982,A big charity show, The Multi Star Night with more than 20 Artists was organised at Barshi which provided a cemented platform for the finance and team would start the activities with the help of this fund.

Ashwini Rural Cancer Research and Relief Society (ARCRRS) was established in 1980 with its office at Barshi with the objective of providing comprehensive cancer care to the rural community.

Ashwini Rural Cancer Research and Relief Society is a NGO – a registered voluntary organization under the society’s registration act 1860. It established Nargis Dutt Memorial Cancer Hospital (NDMCH) in 1981 and is managing the affairs of the hospital ever since.

Nargis Dutt Memorial Cancer Hospital

Nargis Dutt Memorial Cancer Hospital Barshi is situated in Solapur District of Western Maharashtra in India. Barshi is a small town like rural area with one lakh population, the local leaders & Medical practionor’s under leadership of founder member & chairman Dr.B.M.Nene established NGO called Ashwini Rural Cancer Research Relief Society. The object of NGO to relief cancer patient as well as research on cancer.

Under this society different type of the project under taken Despite limited academic infrastructure, a small rural cancer effort has blossomed into a major community cancer centre, which has made a national & international mark with the Indian Council of Medical Research, WHO/IARC, Bill & Melinda Gate Foundation. USA and Alliance for Cervical Cancer Prevention.
